February 25, 2011.
Dear Mr. Gilberto Gil:
As members of the Network Jewish anti-Zionists International, we adhere to the letter had been sent to you by group of Israeli citizens who support the call for cultural boycott of the state of Israel (BDS) as a way pressing the state government to end its colonial and apartheid policies against the Palestinian people.
find attached a translation into English of the letter dated israeliense group on February 3, 2011, extracted from

,
for your consideration and reference.
Like the Israeli group, we think that in the context of the moment we see the peoples of the Middle East get up in a heroic against oppression, supporting the BDS is now the only non-violent manner, in complete harmony with this historical process, to promote the release of the Palestinian people.
We parted with the hope that in future we can say that you stood on the right side of history. Sincerely,

We are members of a group of about 200 Israeli citizens who support the cultural boycott of Israel led by the Palestinians. As you are an artist who has in his own experience of imprisonment and exile by the military regime in their country, we learned with great dismay of his concert schedule in the city of Tel Aviv. The Palestinian call
[1]for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel (BDS) was issued in 2005 by more than 170 Palestinian civil society to counter racism and other oppressive mechanisms such as mass expulsion and illegal imprisonment. We realize that is not the first time you visit Israel. Not due to the function itself, but its current context so please consider the Palestinian call and cancel his performance in Israel. Through this cancellation you initiative will support the nonviolent Palestinian civil society, which is becoming more widespread in the world and is based in the defense of human rights.
The BDS call is the most unanimous policy initiative today. This represents people from all sectors who used to live in historic Palestine, Palestinians living under military siege and occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Palestinian citizens of Israel who were under military rule until 1966, and since then have been facing systematic racial discrimination, apartheid-like, by Israel, and Palestinian refugees who were sacked and expelled from Israel in 1948 and their descendants living in refugee camps in Gaza and the West Bank or in exile (some of these live in Israel). Instead of referring falsely colonial conflict in Israel / Palestine as a mere territorial dispute and to avoid adopting solutions, BDS call focuses on international law and the rights of the Palestinian people and individuals, which should be the basis for any just and peaceful solution.
The BDS call was inspired by similar campaigns made by Indians South Africa to overthrow apartheid in his country, a struggle in which cultural boycotts played a crucial role in drawing world attention to the oppression of South Africans. The call is backed by almost the entire community
[2]Palestinian cultural workers and other international supporters. It also serves as an inspiration and is supported by the popular resistance activists disarmed. Activists such as Abdallah Abu-Rahmah of Bil'in who has been detained for more than a year in an Israeli military prison for the vague charge of "incitement" and "organizing demonstrations illegal. " Abu Rahmah's imprisonment triggered widespread international condemnation, Amnesty International gave the name of prisoner of conscience
[3]
and the EU has condemned his trial
[4] repeatedly. In a letter from prison it encourages its supporters, "the international campaign of boycott and international legal action under the universal jurisdiction, have expanded the impact of our popular demonstrations in Palestine" [5] . Another human rights activist detained in an Israeli prison and recently sentenced to 9 years is Ameer Makhoul. Makhoul is an Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel and the director general of Ittijah, an organization of some 80 civil society NGO that was founded by Palestinian citizens of Israel and is a signatory to the call of the BDS in 2005. Makhoul was brutally arrested by the Israeli Shabak [domestic intelligence service of Israel], tortured and stripped of their legal rights including the right to see their lawyers. His case was also muted and did not spread in the media communication. In his letter from jail says [6] : "Based on my experience and the fact that there are about 7,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, I have concluded that the lack of evidence poses no obstacle to the Shabak. They have their secret weapon, or as they call 'the secret evidence. " The show before the judges, but neither I nor my lawyers have permission to know what it is. The Israeli system never blame the state or the Shabak, but blamed its Palestinian victims. "
Makhoul was convicted for contacting a "foreign agent", a very vague term in the lexicon of Israeli security forces, as he explains: "Israel will never allow their court declare me innocent. On the other hand, every Palestinian refugee has a friend or partner in the Arab world is potentially considered as a "foreign agent". " Amnesty International has also condemned the judicial process Makhoul [7] .
In order to eliminate such inequities and their causes based in iniquity, a large number of international artists have canceled their performances in Israel. Some of these, and many others, have explicitly committed themselves to supporting the cultural boycott. These are some of the names and lists of requests for such artists: Carlos Santana, Gil Scott Heron, Elvis Costello, Devendra Banhart, Dave Randall
[8] and Maxi Jazz from Faithless, Vanessa Paradis, Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack
[9]
,180 Irish artists [10] , 500 artists from Montreal [11] and international alliance Artists Against Apartheid [12] . In honor of his legacy against racism and human rights support, hope your name is part of this great international effort is growing day by day. Yours sincerely,
